Easy Snowman Craft for Kids
As soon as I saw snow in the forecast, Pooky and I started reading snow themed books. One of our favorites is Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. It's an imaginative tale with fun and beautiful pictures by Mark Buehner. (Affiliate link disclosure)
I've used this book (and the others in the series) with children for years. When I taught elementary school, I would use it as an inspiration for a creative writing assignment. Since Pooky isn't quite ready for that, we just tied in a snowman sock craft that I also did with my students.
This is an easy craft project that can be done with kids from toddler age and up. Just adjust the amount of help needed by an adult.
Step 1: Fill a tube sock with rice leaving enough of the sock to tie a knot at the top. The way I had my 2.5 year old help with this part was by putting the sock into a large cup (think Venti Starbucks). I stretched it over the rim of the cup to stay in place and had Pooky scoop rice into the sock. (bonus - fine motor skill practice) Once the sock is full enough of rice, tie a knot in the end of it nice and tight to make the rice compact.
Step 2: Fold the end of the sock down over the knot to create the "hat."
Step 3: Use a 1-inch wide strip of felt or other fabric to tie the "scarf" on the snowman about two-thirds of the way up from the bottom. This will help create two section (the face and body) of the snowman.
Step 4: Pick out your accessories. We chose to use googly eyes, buttons, snowflakes, foam, felt, and pom-poms. Wihen I did this in the classroom with fourth graders, they decorated with construction paper, markers, and puffy paint. Use what you have or take a trip to your craft store.
Step 5: Glue on the accessories. Since I was making this craft with a toddler, I would place dots of glue on the snowman and then Pooky would put the decoration onto the glue. (We had already analyzed the snowman pictures in the books together, so she knew about the carrot nose and buttons down the front, etc...) If you're working with older kids, you may feel comfortable using a low-heat glue gun instead.
We had so much fun that we made two. (A large one and a small one.)
These are so simple and cute that you could have fun creating a whole snowman display!
