Quick Fall Fine Motor Activity for Pre-K

While going through my fall decor items, I came across some fall leaf stickers I'd bought on clearance at the end of the season last fall.  I knew Pooky would want to play with them, so I threw together an activity. There's a good chance you already have the materials for this activity or can easily acquire them.

Note: If you have a chance to go for a nature walk and look at real trees with changing leaves, it would greatly enhance the learning that could come from this craft.

Learning Opportunities:

  • identifying fall colors (orange, yellow, brown, red

  • fine motor skills

  • the science of leaves changing colors

Materials Used:

  • one sheet each brown and white (or other background color) construction paper

  • glue and scissors for making the tree

  • leaf shape stickers

Set Up:

I cut out a simple tree shape from brown construction paper and glued it to a white background (but maybe blue would've looked better). I placed one sticker on the tree to demonstrate, and Pooky took over from there.

She couldn't wait to use the stickers! Who doesn’t love sticker?!

Peeling the backing off stickers is tricky for little hands. Sticker activities are a good way for toddlers and preschoolers to strengthen their fine motor skills.

And it gave us a chance to talk about the leaves changing colors and falling off the tree. (I always love a built-in science lesson.) We talked about how some leaves are still on the tree and some are already on the ground.

It also provided practice identifying the fall colors red, yellow, brown, and orange.

Plus it was a lot of fun!

You could finish off this craft by finding an old picture frame to put it in and add it to your fall decor.
